About Us

   back

Orange Crush Studios is located on the site of the former Jackson Street Barbershop. John Fukuda cut hair in a Japanese internment camp during World War II, and at the time a barber cut cost just 50 cents. When the war ended, John partnered with his brother Atsuo and opened Jackson Street Barbershop in the current location of Orange Crush Studios.
The price of a haircut increased to a whopping $1.50, but the shop was successful and the brothers kept it for nearly 30 years. At the time, there were 5 barbershops located in Japan town. John passed away and Atsuo sold the shop sometime during the 1960s.
While it is a coincidence that Orange Crush Studios is located on the site of a former barbershop, I am truly honored and privileged to be here. Japan town is not simply a neighborhood, it is a community, rich in history and steeped in tradition. I chose to locate here for many reasons. But the greatest reason is because I live here.
Barbershops and beauty parlors were not only businesses that performed a necessary service, they acted as ad hoc community centers and gathering places for local residents. Not only could you get a great style, you could meet dear friends, participate in heated debates, catch up on news and gossip and always feel welcome.
These businesses are slowly fading away, replaced by high-end salons and quickie cut shops that no longer serve the community in which they are located. I truly wish to bring back the concept of gathering place. Orange Crush Studios is not a fancy salon, our prices are modest by comparison, and we only do hair. But we hope each client leaves here feeling like he or she is welcomed and appreciated.
The historical photos and history were provided by Atsuo’s son (Rory Fukuda), Carol Rast (one of the owners of Roy’s Coffee Station) and Leroy Mayeda (my landlord and owner of Okayama Restaurant).
Humbly Yours,
